Bridgestone: From a Japanese Rubber Workshop to the World's Largest Tire Manufacturer

Bridgestone is the world's largest tire manufacturer by revenue — a position it has held for decades — and one of the most recognized names in the automotive industry globally. Its origins are distinctly human: in 1931, Shōjirō Ishibashi founded Bridgestone in Kurume, Japan. The name "Bridgestone" is itself a translation of the founder's surname — Ishibashi means "stone bridge" in Japanese. The first Bridgestone tire was produced in April 1930, and just a year later the company was formally established. From those early years in Fukuoka Prefecture, Bridgestone grew relentlessly — first dominating the Japanese market, then expanding to become a global force. Today Bridgestone operates 181 production facilities across 24 countries and serves more than 150 countries and territories, with a workforce of approximately 129,000 people.

The Firestone Acquisition

The defining moment in Bridgestone's global expansion came in 1988 when it acquired Firestone Tire and Rubber Company — one of America's most storied tire brands. The deal transformed Bridgestone into a truly global manufacturer with a major presence in North America, access to decades of Firestone's motorsport heritage, and the manufacturing scale to compete with any rival on earth.

Motorsport Heritage

Bridgestone entered motorsport in the 1980s and entered Formula 1 racing in 1997 — going on to become a dominant force in the sport. During its F1 tenure, Bridgestone supplied tires for multiple World Drivers' and Constructors' Championship victories, cementing its technical credibility among the world's most demanding automotive engineers. Today the company is active in Formula E, bringing its EV technology credentials to the cutting edge of electric motorsport.

Bridgestone's engineering philosophy centers on NanoPro-Tech — a polymer technology platform that optimizes the interaction between rubber molecules to achieve simultaneous improvements in wet grip, rolling resistance, and wear life. This technology underpins tires across the range, from the touring Turanza family to the performance-oriented Potenza lineup.
